Ausstellung "The MCCA Collection, Revisited"

Developed during her residency at the Museum of Contemporary Circumpolar Art (MCCA), this exhibition presents Isabelle Uyaralaaq Avingaq Choquette’s curatorial engagement with the museum’s collection.

Working closely with artworks from Nunavik that have found their way to Switzerland, Avingaq Choquette brings her expertise as curator of the Nunavik Inuit Art Collection at the Avataq Cultural Institute into dialogue with the MCCA holdings. Her approach is grounded in research, care and a deep knowledge of Inuit material and artistic heritage.

The exhibition is part of an emerging collaboration between MCCA and the Avataq Cultural Institute, aimed at strengthening exchange, knowledge-sharing and long-term institutional partnerships.

Rather than presenting the collection as a fixed entity, the exhibition opens it up to new readings and relationships. Through her perspective, the works are revisited, recontextualized and placed in conversation with the communities, histories and knowledge systems they are connected to.

The MCCA Collection, Revisited reflects an ongoing process of exchange and collaboration, and contributes to advancing Indigenous-led approaches in curatorial and museum practice.

Die Ausstellung entstand im Rahmen einer Residency am Museum of Contemporary Circumpolar Art (MCCA) und präsentiert die kuratorische Auseinandersetzung von Isabelle Uyaralaaq Avingaq Choquette mit der Sammlung des Museums.

In enger Arbeit mit Kunstwerken aus Nunavik, die ihren Weg in die Schweiz gefunden haben, bringt Avingaq Choquette ihre Expertise als Kuratorin der Nunavik Inuit Art Collection am Avataq Cultural Institute in einen Dialog mit den Beständen des MCCA ein. Ihr Ansatz basiert auf sorgfältiger Recherche, einem verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit den Werken sowie einer tiefen Kenntnis des materiellen und künstlerischen Erbes der Inuit.

Die Ausstellung ist Teil einer sich entwickelnden Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem MCCA und dem Avataq Cultural Institute, die den Austausch, die gemeinsame Wissensproduktion und langfristige institutionelle Partnerschaften stärkt.

Anstatt die Sammlung als statische Einheit zu präsentieren, öffnet die Ausstellung neue Lesarten und Beziehungen. Aus ihrer Perspektive werden die Werke neu betrachtet, in andere Zusammenhänge gestellt und in Beziehung zu den Gemeinschaften, Geschichten und Wissenssystemen gesetzt, mit denen sie verbunden sind.

The MCCA Collection, Revisited versteht sich als Teil eines fortlaufenden Prozesses von Austausch und Zusammenarbeit und trägt dazu bei, Indigenous-led Ansätze in kuratorischer und musealer Praxis weiterzuentwickeln.
